For the first time PRO-IMPLANT Foundation hosted at the Workshop on PJI also participants from Latvia: Dr. Peteris Studers (Trauma/Ortho) and Dr. Martins Malzubris (Ortho and Bone Infections). We are looking forward to establishing a close collaboration in research and clinical practice with Baltic countries.
Dr. Peteris Studers and Dr. Martins Malzubris both work in the Hospital of Traumatology and Orthopedics (TOS) of Riga, Latvia.
We have asked a couple of questions to our Latvian Workshop on PJI participants regarding PJI in Latvia:
- How many arthroplasty surgeries you perform annually?
- How many hip/knee and shoulder replacements do you perform annually?
- Do you face prosthetic joint infections in your daily praxis?
Dr. Peteris Studers explained there are around 900 hip and around 500 knee arthroplasties performed annually. In addition, the hospital performs around 100 hip and around 40 knee revision surgeries every year. The infection rate is around 15-20 infections/per year for each – hip and knee prosthesis.
PRO-IMPLANT Foundation hopes to establish a far-reaching and enduring collaboration with Latvian physicians. The foundation also plans to establish collaboration with several other Baltic and Eastern European countries within the framework of European Prosthetic Joint Infection Cohort (EPJIC).
