The role of D-lactate as a pathogen specific marker in synovial fluid in native and prosthetic joints compared to leukocytes in this research project was evaluated. It was demonstrated high analytical performance and diagnostic capabilities of synovial fluid D-lactate measurement for the diagnosis of infection in native and prosthetic joins. It is rapid and accurate test for differentiating infection from aseptic inflammatory joint conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis or gout. The test can be performed in <1 hour in the outpatient setting.
