Eva Vacha is investigating hematogenous infections of joint prosthesis originating from the oral cavity. She is a dentist and finished her faculty at the Ludwig-Maximilian-University in Munich in 2014. This topic has a high clinical relevance since many periprosthetic joint infection may potentiall be prevented by appropriate antibiotic prophylaxis.
Mouth flora – especially streptococci – is a common cause of periprosthetic joint infection after dental procedures or dental hygiene manipulations. Current guidelines do not recommend antibiotic prophylaxis before dental procedures. This option is challenged by Eva Vacha´s research project. In her first part, the microbiology of implant-associated infections is correlated with microorganisms of the oral flora. In the second part, a prospective interventional multicenter study will be performed to investigate the incidence of bacteremia and hematogenous periprosthetic joint infections after dental procedure, randomized in two arms with and without antibiotic prophylaxis. PRO-IMPLANT Foundation supports this innovative research with an educational grant.
