Recently, the Center for Septic Surgery of Charité - University Medicine Berlin hosted an observer, Pietro Vittozzi, from Italy.
Here his feedback:
"In the context of the ESCMID Observership program, I spent one month at the Center for Septic Surgery - Center for Musculoskeletal Surgery - Charité Virchow-Klinikum in Berlin.
In this specialized and unique center, where a multidisciplinary team works together, I had the opportunity to gain knowledge of all kind of infective complications in the orthopedic surgery. My interest was especially focused on the management of prosthetic joint infections and during this period I learned a lot of new things about it: from the pre-operative assessment to the new treatment approaches with their different surgical timing and especially the correct use of the antimicrobial therapy. I also had the opportunity to follow the infectious diseases consultants in their activities at the outpatients' clinic and in all other wards of the Campus. In advance I could take part in the clinical and laboratory meetings where all the ongoing research projects were presented.
I would like to thank PD Dr. Andrej Trampuz and his staff for this opportunity, the friendly welcome and the daily helpfulness. This experience was really informative and useful for the specialty training. I definitely recommend the observership at this collaborative center that represent a medical excellence in this very important field of the infectious diseases."
